The region “Madre de Dios” is a department whose economy is based on the search for gold, the exploitation of wood and the conquest of new lands. These perspectives attract a population of several origins, consisting mostly of men in search of quick profits.
The mining sector consists of a true “far-west” where the law of the strongest reigns.
The great poverty, diseases, violence and alcohol destroy the bonds between people. Children are the first victims of this extreme economic and social context. Many of them are left to themselves, abandoned, physically abused, sexually harassed.
Apronia helps to help these children and young people who do not find means and resources, in order to support them and assist them.
The number of children, who need urgent protection is ten times higher than the capacity of reception that exists in the city !. The government does not care much about that. They come from the entire department and the number of children and adolescents that we can not accommodate, due to lack of resources, is more than 120 per year!
On the other hand, many requests concern situations that do not require a reception in the home, but a follow-up in their homes. The social workers of Apronia try to support these young people by visiting them regularly and with availability 24/7.
The offer of the State is practically non-existent. The lack of political will, of trained personnel in the region or of adequate financing does not allow all these young people to help.
Apronia will continue to act so that the State assumes the protection of children and youth by applying its own laws.
