Puerto Maldonado 55 km west of the Bolivian and Brazilian borders, near the confluence of the Tambopata River and the  Madre de Dios River, tributary of the Beni, and then of the Amazon River.

The city of Puerto Maldonado, located in the south-eastern Peruvian jungle, at an altitude of 210 m, has a population of 140,000,000 inhabitants and is the fastest growing city in the country.

The climate is tropical and humid, typical of the Amazonian plain. The city, located at the junction of two rivers and, now, crossed by the inter-oceanic highway, which connects the ports of the Pacific with those of the Atlantic.

The main economic activities of Puerto Maldonado are the search for gold, the harvest of the nut, the construction of boats and ecotourism. In 2011 the construction of the longest bridge in South America was completed to allow crossing the river and thus more easily reach the Brazilian border.
